The Small "r" uses the yellowed, cracked lens of small-r republicanism to consider contemporary issues. At its founding America was a democratic republic, not just a democracy. It was assumed citizens would remain engaged as a check against growth of these institutional powers, and the Bill of Rights ensured engagement found a space within society to freely operate.
